Thursday Thirteen #10!!!

13 Top Earning Celebs** (**Who are Dead)

Now normally I try to research something with a little more meat than this, but I have been known to say “the hell with it” and go for the joke. Not that being dead is a joke, but the fact that these people (12 men and 1 woman) make more money DEAD than I do ALIVE is a bona vide knee-slapper. There’s something wrong about that, but I don’t feel like thinking about that right now.

So here’s some news right off the top. To hit this list, the dead celeb had to have earned at least $7 million in a year….and collectively, this list earned $247 million dollars in 2005/2006.

#1 – I’m shocked. That’s all I have to say. It’s Kurt Cobain. What the hell is that all about?

#2 – Who I thought would be number 1 and actually has been for a number of years: Mr. Gyration: Elvis Presley.

#3 – The creator of Snoopy and Charlie Brown and Woodstock and Lucy: Mr. Charles M. Schulz.

#4 – John Lennon.

#5 – This shocked me. Really. It’ll shock you too. He earned at least $7,000,000 dollars over the course of the year. Sure he told us that E=mc2, but he’s still drawing in the bucks: Mr. Albert Einstein. Perhaps it’s due to the sale of those pictures of him sticking his tongue out.

#6 – Another one I can’t figure out. Andy Warhol. Although maybe someone sold one of his pictures, and that earned him the 7mil.

#7 – This one made me happy. I read his stuff when I was small and apparently lots of kids are still buying “Red Fish, Blue Fish” – Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel).

#8 – Ray Charles. I heard the movie helped create a resurgence of appreciation for his music and I’m glad. He is a genius.

#9 – Forever and ever and ever. She’ll probably be on this list till the end of time: Ms. Boop-boop-be-doop, Marilyn Monroe.

#10 – Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only: Mr. Johnny Cash.

#11 -- Perhaps because of the new interest in hobbits and rings and stuff: J.R.R. Tolkien.

#12 – My own personal Beatle, whose stuff I still buy, finding it my own personal goal of supporting Olivia and Dhani: Mr. George Harrison.

#13 – And finally: Bob Marley.

So, any surprises here? Who did you think would be on the list?

Einstein shocked me, but yeah, I can see Kurt Cobain making more money than Elvis. Which is a shame, given that Elvis has things like Graceland to bring him cash and Kurt's estate has ... sales to Rock Star TV shows so wanna-be lead singers can impress other rock stars. (and yes, I've been addicted to both shows so far.)

Interesting facts indeed! Another Beatle fan here:)

Happy TT! Mine's up:)

When I heard them talking about this list on the radio a few weeks ago, I was surprised that Kurt Cobain was #1 and that Einstein even made the list. I thought that Marilyn Monroe would be higher on the list. I also thought that John Lennon, Bogie, and James Dean would make the list.

Hi Malcolm -- John was #4 -- he was just tucked away in between and I didn't want to comment because I would have referred to Yoko and well, I just decided not to!
How PC is THAT??

This is very interesting--my favorite is Dr. Seuss, I think!

Kurt Cobain could help retire the national debt.

Love the facts. I *wish* i were rich. ;)

Mine is up, my topic is a little depressing, I had a rough week but visit me anyway. :)

Wow, i loved reading this. Good research on this one!!

I've always liked Kurt Cobain, and the only Nirvana I bought I picked up after his passing, so that doesn't surprise me. However I also bought tons of Sinatra after he kicked and am suprised he's NOT here. Nor, come to think of it, are Dino or Sammelah. These kids today! Don't they appreciate ring-a-ding-ding?

If I didn't think that Courtney Love was a moneygrubber who sold the rights to most of Kurt's music to make a buck, I'd be suprised that he's number one. Sadly, I've seen the Cobain "action figures" in music stores. That's enough to make me a believer in this list.

Happy TT!

Wow, that was fascinating. Who knew...Albert is till raking in the dough? And Kurt Cobain, argh.

Anonymous said...

Very interesting. I was surprised by several of those!

Obviously dying can be a very good career move!

Hey: George Harrison is MY personal Beatle! This is an interesting and---as you say, rather baffling--- list.

Wow, if you'd asked me to compose a list by guesswork, I would have put Elvis at #1 and Marilyn Monroe at #2. Some of the folks on the list don't surprise me, but others do -- i.e. Einstein, though that tickles me, too! Einstein rocked. :-D

What a great idea for a list!

Kurt Cobain is #1?! Now that's a shocker indeed!

Probably rather juvenile of me but this South Park song popped into my head when I was reading your entry:

Dead, Dead, Dead, someday you'll be dead
Dead, Dead, Dead, someday we'll all be dead.

Great entry ... my simple truths are up.

I think we started T13 at the same time. Mine's on the 10th week too.

What will happen to the riches of the dead? You mean even after their relatives squander all the money they are still (the dead) considered "rich"?

I'm not surprised Cobain is on the list, but that he topped Elvis, that was unexpected.

John Lennon, Charles Schulz, Ray Charles, Dr. Suess, Bob Marley, all great to see them there. Depressing, but great.

Thanks for the thought provoking smile.

Cool list! My husband and I just spent the afternoon watching Ray Charles and Johnny Cash videos on YouTube. I'm not surprised at all about those two!

I really want to know what Albert Einstein is earning royalties from.

And my household is personally helping to keep Dr. Seuss' estate afloat - we love his books!

That was an interesting read. It has always surprized me that people are worth more dead than alive, what an odd world we live in....

Mom not Mum (Sandy) said...

Wow that was a cool list - really - Bob Marley?? Kurt Cobain? Where does Einstiens money go?

Interesting. It shouldn't have surprised me to see my hero Tolkien on this list, but for some strange reason it did. (Maybe I still haven't come to terms with the fact that he is actually dead. Whatever.)
And Einstein? Really? I'd be really curious to hear what he is making this money from.
Loved to see Johnny Cash, but personally would have rated him higher than Ray Charles (and certainly higher than John Lennon). But that just goes to show that I have no clue about the music business (and that I am not a Beatles fan). ;o)
Thanks for this list. And thanks for stopping by my site.

most interesting.
reminded me of a game we played
dead or alive.
one person would think of a celebrity.
the other would guess if that celebrity was still dead or alive.
this is where we usually tripped up. assuming since all their stuff was still selling like hotcakes, that they were still alive.

And, I'd take Cobain over Elvis or any oneof the Beatles in a heartbeat.

That made me sad to see how many great spirits have passed on. Interesting, though.

Well, I know I won't be making that kind of cash before or after I am dead. Geez! What an eye opening list.

I'm like you. I would have put Elvis Presley as #1. I guess it's okay for him to be #1 in our book. :)

Now this is very cool. I'm not surprised about Kirk in a way. He'll hit the younger generations as they go through their angst period. Love this list!

That's quite the amusing TT! I agree with you that I wouldn't have guessed Mr. Cobain to beat out Mr. Presley either.

Open Grove Claudia said...

Great list! Although, every time I turn on the radio I hear Nirvana - so it's not too surprising that Kurt Colbain is #1.

Great list, but not too shocking. Estate rights and all that jazz. UGH can you tell that my Evil Day Job is law. Bleh.

Happy TT and thanks for dropping by mine.

Number 5 is surprising to me because 7 mil would have been an incredibly huge amount of money back then. Not to say it's not a lot now, but then? Yikes.

Wow. That's an interesting list. I was surprised by several of those, including Albert Einstein. Great TT this week!

That is a great list! I never would have guessed some of those...

Kurt Cobain has big merchandising income. If this is the same list as I saw a while ago then Che Guevara would make the list if he were the recipient of the royalties from his picture appearing on things but they go to the photographer who took the famous shot :-)

Natalie said...

I really enjoyed your list!

Interesting list. Einstein was a little surprising, but the rest make sense. :-)

I'm not that surprised by Kurt. People knock him but I lived in Seattle at the end of the 80's and the beginning of the 90's. The first time I heard the "grunge" sound, it changed my view and opinions on music. Nirvanna and Pearl Jam were the Beatles and Rolling Stones of the "Alternative Music" movement.

I would have never guessed Kurt was the top earning dead celeb, either. Learn something new every day.

Interesting! I thought Elvis would be number one.
